I am a reading teacher and my students are small groups of four students in Grades One through Three. I keep them for 8 weeks and then after we retest the students, we create another list of students who need help.
My students are eager learners but they are below level in reading.
Many are recent arrivals from other countries such as Puerto Rico. They are making good progress but need a lot of support to get to where they should be academically.
My Project
The research shows that the more students read, the better they get! Practice makes perfect! What better way than to give them books to take home and keep! I teach small groups of Leveled Literacy Intervention program. One of the key components is to send home a black and white book every night. The next day my first graders have told me they read the book 1,236 times!! A bit of a exaggeration but a testimony to how they feel about reading at home.
I know the students will LOVE having their own books to keep at home!!!
