Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
*This is a continuation of my proposal "Helping First Graders Develop a Love of Reading."
I teach at a Title 1 school in Richmond, California. My students come from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The majority of them come from families of lower socioeconomic status, in which parents often work evenings or work two jobs. Many of my students cannot afford books at home, and their main interaction with childrens' books is my classroom. I love teaching first grade because that is when most students learn to read and it is exciting for them as well as for me.
My students love to hear and read quality literature. I am asking for some guided reading books that are truly good stories and that the children will love reading while they are acquiring and strengthening their reading skills. Guided reading books are leveled so that the students can select a book that is a little above their reading ability but not too hard for them to read. Good stories will help them enjoy the reading challenges while developing a love of reading. Specifically, these books will be at the level of my lowest readers, so that they too can enjoy quality literature independently and develop posotive reading self esteem.
I will use these books to teach reading in small groups, and students will be able to take them home to read to their families for practice and enjoyment. The books will also be available to my students in my classroom library for them to enjoy whenever they like.
My students and I will greatly appreciate these books. They love learning how to read, and it is so empowering for them. I want to make sure they develop a love of reading!
I am also asking for some book boxes to store the books. These will help students to easily access the books at their reading level.
