My Students
My students reside in a high-poverty community and most of their parents work long hours and struggle to help them with homework. Most students read below grade level and are focused on day-to-day survival instead of working toward long-term academic goals. My students depend on the school for cognitive stimulation, encouragement, stability, social services and tangible resources. Although my students have enormous potential, they also have numerous environmental and socioeconomic challenges. Some students have gaps in their learning that require remediation, while others would benefit from enrichment and advanced learning opportunities.
My Project
Many students experience stress and require support in learning how to self-regulate and respectfully express their emotions. This project is aimed at providing students with a variety of sensory tools (audio, visual, offactory & kinesthetic) to help them calm down and learn to express extreme emotions in a healthy manner. The noise reduction headphones and sound machine will help students tune out loud noises in our busy, fast-paced environment. The yoga mat, poses and calming oil will support students in monitoring their breathing and relaxing their bodies. The punching bag and resistence bands will provide students an opportunity to engage in safe and healthy physical activities.
The donated materials will enhance our learning environment and help students develop healthy ways of managing their socio-emotional needs.
