Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

The foundation to succesful reading is strengthened through phonics instruction. It is then that my Master Builders are able to apply phonemes to graphemes in order to effectively decode and encode words. To do so, my Master Builders need multiple, on-going, and engaging opportunities to practice. After all, practice makes perfect!

Learning centers are implemented during small group instruction to provide my Master Builders with the time for independent practice and peer collaboration.

These are often the best strategies to use for reinforcement since students interpret them as play and do not realize they are, in fact, learning. In my state, it is now law that students who are not reading on a third grade-level will be retained in that grade. This is measured by their achievement on their end-of-the-year standardized testing. I teach second grade which introduces students to that standardized testing experience. The most important tool for these students' testing experience is being able to fluently read so they can focus on comprehending the questions being asked to them.

The Instant Phonics Centers system that I am requesting will efficiently and effectively give my Master Builders the necessary practice to help them master phonics skills while increasing their self-efficacy to fluently read.
