My Project

Our school is a low income, Title 1 school with most students on free or reduced lunch. In particular, our class is an isolated resource room that works with emotionally disabled students in crisis, and are direct victims of violence, abuse, neglect and poverty. Most of our students have been in an emotional disability class for most of their academic career.

As students with disabilities, we find that our students struggle to understand realistic consequences, rewards and goals.

To assist with this, we have a class shop that is stocked with what the students requested, it includes meals, drinks, snacks and privileges that can be purchased with class behavior bucks. With this Fiesta Bowl grant, we will be purchasing things that our students will have to save, invest in and learn to manage their money to get what they want properly. They will learn consequences to their behavior, which will keep them from receiving things that they want.

Our students often ask us to stock the shop, but we were on such a limited plan before, we would tell them they would just have to wait. They always want updates on their points and on how many points they have after each period, the short term goal helps them understand what they need to do and have an immediate reward for doing so. This shop helps them so much.
