This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My chorus students are excited to learn music everyday. They have a joy and passion for singing, and it translates in their work every day. These students come from a wide range of educational backgrounds, from gifted students to IEP students. We are a Title I school in a high poverty area.
Often, chorus is the one class of the day where everyone can succeed regardless of socioeconomic or educational backgrounds.
The chorus has 240 5th and 6th grade members (roughly 30% of the entire school). Chorus provides a way for my students to express themselves in a healthy and supportive environment. It gives them a chance to forget about the worries of today and just be a kid.
My Project
No 21st-century classroom is complete without technology, and that includes chorus! I try to incorporate technology as much as possible; but with state testing and curriculum goals, we often have to compete for access to enough Chromebooks for every student. Having a class set specifically for chorus will allow students to have the quality time needed to create amazing projects!
With a class set of Chromebooks, students will now be able to complete research based projects that interest them, sparking creativity and deepening their love of music.
We will be able to practice composing music using various online composition sites and software. We can also begin using Google classroom to complete assignments.
