I am a thirty-two-year-old teacher with nine years' experience teaching first and second grades. Recently, my principal proposed a new position to me, a health, nutrition, and physical fitness teacher. I would be part of a team and would work solely with the first grade. After thinking about this idea, I realized how severe the health crisis is in the South Bronx and how I could make a difference.
I am asking for basic equipment and materials that would support the vision I have for this program. I would like to have fun, age-appropriate books to teach students about hygiene. I would like to expose children to the importance of nutrition in their lives and want them to become familiar with the food pyramid and healthy eating habits. I also would like to provide my students with aerobic exercises and fun movement activities that can be done within the classroom to promote healthy habits and lifestyles.
I am very excited to start helping my little students learn how to take better care of themselves in a fun manner, and maybe they can spread their knowledge to others they come into contact with. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
