My students need 75 copies of "Catcher in the Rye" to be able to not only read in class, but take books home to enjoy and learn beyond our school walls and practice responsibility.
My ELA students are always asking for new and interesting books to read. We plan on creating our next unit around "Catcher in the Rye", but want to be able to take the book BEYOND the classroom. This project allows students to take books home and take their learning to the next level.
My students come from a majority low income environment and don't often have the funds to explore learning beyond the classroom.
They take care of family and work outside the home, so trips to the library tend to be limited. They will actively read at home if given the materials, but often we do not have the resources for more than a single class set. Not easy to distribute or use when you co-teaching 3-5 classes with the same book.
My Project
I am requesting 75 copies of "Catcher in the Rye" so that my students have the ability to take their learning home with them. I want them to learn to love reading as much as I do as their ELA/ Special Education teacher.
I know the students who have access to books at home love to come to class and give me frequent updates, and I have seen the success and heightened learning process that takes place when my students read at home.
This also allows for more in depth conversation in the classroom, since less time is taken with in class reading, and more on discussion and analysis in groups and on an individual level.
My students and school often do not have the resources they badly need.
You can create a life long reader and lover of books with the simple donation of this classic. Please help my students learn and expand the ways in which I am able to teach them.
