My Students

Can you imagine having so much to say but being unable to say it? That is the challenge many of my students with special needs face everyday. They want to interact just like other kids, but don't always have the skills or the tools to do so.

The special-needs preschool students I work with have a variety of disabilities including autism, down syndrome and developmental delays.

They come from primarily low-income areas and have a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Many of them are non-verbal or speak only a handful of words, but they're full of personality!

My Project

With the Go Talk 9 device, non-verbal or minimally-verbal students have a chance to participate just like their peers. By pushing a button, the device generates a recording that "speaks" for the child and can be used to help the child sing songs and answer questions at circle time, talk with their friends, and ask for food/drink during snack time. Devices like these are in high demand in our district and have to be shared among all special programs, making it almost impossible to have enough for everyone.

Communication is so important, yet often taken for granted.

For the students I work with, it can mean the difference between success and failure not only in school, but in life. The Go Talk 9 device will be a powerful tool in helping my students take the first steps toward better communication.
