Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom of 23 students, about half of whom receive special education services. Our students are eager to learn and need the resources in order to be successful in their studies! Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with most of our students receiving free lunch. My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them for the rest of the day!
My Project
The new Common Core language arts and literacy standards place more emphasis on reading nonfiction—starting with an equal emphasis on literature and informational text in elementary school.
At nearly all grade levels, students are expected to develop research skills across content areas with a strong focus on nonfiction, including literary nonfiction; essays; biographies and autobiographies; journals and technical manuals; and charts, graphs, and maps.
With this set of non-fiction texts, our class would have materials needed to access these standards. Reading nonfiction also may be important because it helps students develop their background knowledge across content areas! Help our students by providing them with the support they need to be successful!
