As a special education teacher for severely handicapped students, I am constantly looking for creative ways to help build functional skills for living. The students in my classroom have a wide range of disabilities which impact their communication, motor skills, academic development, and social/emotional skills. Early academics, such as letter/number identification and tracing lines or shapes can take years to develop. Often, the first "reading" begins with pictures and develops into sight words that are found throughout the community and world. Interactive books that use very limited, functional sight words and pictures with velcro and picture cards can be the key to success with these students. Some of these books are commercially available through special education resource catalogs, and they include topics that are common for most students. It is, however, most effective to have books that are teacher-created for the specific needs of each child. With the limited resources available in a large urban school district, I am not able to offer my students these highly engaging and individualized reading materials. With the help of a printer and small laminator, individualized books can be made easily to meet the needs of each student.
