I teach seventh and eighth grade math and science at Community Junior High School 145 in the Bronx. The student population is 1,622. 47% of the students are female and 53% are male. 60% of the students are Hispanic and 36% are Black. 90% of the students are eligible for free lunch. Arturo Toscanini CJHS 145 was divided into three sub-schools. Each school has a different theme. The three themes are creative arts, business and science. I currently work in the Academy for Creative Education and the Arts. Part of the reason for creating a theme based school was to create interest and a sense of focus for the students. All of the students were eager and excited to be a part of the creative arts school because it would give them an opportunity to express their creative sides. The school offered some programs in music and art. Unfortunately, the school does not have adequate resources to accommodate the students. I would like to develop a music program at CJHS 145 that gives all of the students an opportunity to develop their musical talents. I have played guitar for over four years and am currently taking courses at Teachers College, Columbia University in music instruction. I would like to offer a guitar course for the students at CJHS 145. I teach four classes of thirty students per class. I would like to implement this activity in order to help students develop their musical talents. The students chose to be part of the creative arts school because they wanted the opportunity to express themselves.
