Help Restore Our Books and Toys That Hurricane Harvey Destroyed
My students need books and toys that Hurricane Harvey destroyed. They enjoy reading books about their emotions and problems they may be having. Students also enjoy playing games and with age appropriate toys.
Hurricane Harvey came and left our community and our school flooded. Our school is the heart of a small rural community located along the Texas coast. My counseling room was a favorite spot for students to come to calm down, discuss social, emotional, and/or educational problems, and work on study skills. I serve 750 students ages 3-11 years or 4th grade. Many of our students are now homeless or living in substandard housing as we all try to rebuild after the storm.
My Project
Hurricane Harvey came and flooded our school and community. The counselor's office suffered much loss, but the students especially miss the books and toys. Students have lost so much, both at school and at home, they are just longing for some of the comforts they had before Harvey.
For elementary students, books and toys, like a dollhouse, My Feelings Game, horse stable playset, and Race to the Treasure board game, help when a child is hurting emotionally.
It is so comforting to hear a story about a similar problem to the one they are experiencing. Also play therapy is almost always a sure fire remedy in helping children navigate their social and emotional state. It has been so frustrating trying to help the youngest of our students with few books and toys.
