I want to ignite a passion for reading in my students! To me, there is nothing like getting into a good book, but my students crave electronics. By marrying technology with literature I think I can do that. Please help me provide my students with 2 iPad minis so I can fan the "fire".
This year we are a class of 19, 6 boys and 13 girls.
We come from all walks of life. There is nothing I like more than to get to know my students each year and learn as much as I can about them.
I have known my kiddos for only 1 week but can tell that this is going to be a great year. Many of them are reading basic chapter books with a few exceptions. When I asked the class how many of them like to read, most raised their hands. (The ones who didn't, will!)
Our school is a small community school where many of the children walk to school in the mornings. Blue Grass Elementary is more than a school it is a community, it is a family. I know that I look forward to going to work everyday because of my wonderful Blue Grass Family.
My Project
Our classroom computers are dinosaurs. They are literally older than the students themselves. This year we learned that our old "bubble Macs" do not run the software for Accelerated Reader anymore. That is so discouraging because students love AR. My students need 2 iPad Minis to use for AR.
AR allows students to read a book and then take a quiz, assessing their comprehension of the book. Students earn points and rewards which bolsters their understanding and desire to read. We love AR!
At Blue Grass earning your AR hat in first grade is a right of passage. It shows the world that you have worked hard and read a lot of books. In addition to the hats they continue to earn pins for their hats and everyone gets to wear their hat on Fridays. We even have a song we sing about our AR hat!
In addition to AR the iPad Mini will be used to differentiate instruction for students. There is noting better than classroom instruction that is student specific.
