Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the school nurse for a Title I, inner-city, public school in the heart of Dallas, TX. With a 95% poverty rating, often times we are the only medical care some students receive throughout the year. Unfortunately, our school was recently damaged by an EF-3 tornado and we have been moved to an alternate facility to continue to provide health services to our students. While we have managed to salvage some supplies and equipment, some items need replacement. Our clinic is a high volume clinic seeing anywhere from 70-100 students a day. This year we will reach capacity at 1850 students.
We hope to impact the lives of our students as much as they impact ours.
We see students with varying degrees of medical needs including Type 1 & 2 Diabetes, Spina Bifida, Cystic Fibrosis, seizures, Sickle Cell Anemia, Autism, Downs Syndrome, down to eczema, allergies and daily medication administration. Our students with lifelong illness or disease never let their conditions define them. It is my wish to provide our students with the best possible care, with the best possible outcome.
My Project
It has been a long process to clean up and move out of our school that was destroyed by the tornado along with setting up at our alternate school site. While we have cleaned and managed to salvage many items, there were some that were too damaged and became unsafe to use anymore.
In an effort to utilize the space that we have been given and maintain our student's confidentiality, we are mainly requesting help with replacement of storage and filing equipment.
The chart stand will be multifunctional- it will hold up the vision chart for screenings and also used to hang informational posters, etc. for health promotion activities.
