Help me create a safe, happy, and engaging classroom for my 8th, 9th, and 10th grade students! They are hardworking kids who LOVE to learn. Their imagination and creativity makes each day a joy to teach.
Our school is small and safe, and diversity is embraced.
Our students come from over 20 countries, and our families speak over 40 languages. My students love to share about their cultures and learn about the world from their peers.
My students are 100% English Learners, many of them refugees who have had interrupted schooling and are several years behind grade level in reading.
Their stories are powerful, and their incredible resilience is inspiring. Despite the obstacles they've had to overcome, they have tremendous faith in themselves and in the power of education for a bright future. They are hard workers who have the drive and the dream to make a positive change in the world.
My Project
Our students are learning to speak English, and almost all enter 6th grade reading extremely below grade level. By the time they get to my class (8th, 9th, and 10th grade), they have already improved despite the fact that many start the year with low confidence and a wariness towards reading.
At our school, we have created a robust cross-content curriculum to expose students to the fundamental reading skills necessary for 21st century success.
The books you are funding will be the vehicles with which we will practice these skills.
Developing a love of reading is just as important as skills practice. We are asking you for help funding three beloved classics: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, and Beowulf. Additionally, we are asking you to help fund graphic adaptations of some challenging classics: Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, The Tempest by William Shakespeare, The Odyssey by Homer, and Beowulf. These books provide a shared narrative that will guide instruction and open a door for students who need and deserve so much.
