Help me give my students some toys to use in therapy. I am trying to rebuild my play therapy counseling center after Hurricane Harvey came through and washed the toys away.
Our school is the heart of a small, rural community located along the Texas coast. When Hurricane Harvey came through, our small community was devastated along with our school and my classroom. After nearly 2 years, we are starting to move back into a newly refurbished building, but my beloved toys and counseling tools are still gone.
I am trying to rebuild my therapy playroom that Harvey destroyed.
My counseling program serves over 700 students ages from 3 years to 11 years old. The counseling playroom was a favorite spot for students to come to calm down, discuss social, emotional, and/or educational problems, and work on study skills. Harvey came and went, but the pain and trauma has stayed, I need to rebuild a warm and inviting place for those who need support.
My Project
Hurricane Harvey washed away the toys in my play therapy room. I now have a brand new beautiful room, with very few toys. My task now is to attempt to replace all the beloved toys and therapy games my students have benefited from for over 20 years.
Children going through emotional crises of all kinds open up best at play, and it is imperative that the counseling room has the appropriate toys for each child.
I am in need of a variety of toys in hopes of reaching all who come through my doors. Trauma is hard at all ages, but especially to our very youngest. Play becomes the outlet that helps traumatized children work through the bad stuff that has happened to them.
