Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Thank you for considering this proposal. I am a sixth grade teacher at Walsh Elementary School, part of Chicago Public Schools. My classroom is self contained, meaning I teach most subjects to the students. This system allows for me to make lots of cross-curricular connections, and I feel the students learn more when they are able to relate their knowledge over a number of different subjects. My students would greatly benefit from the use of a large world and US map in our classroom. We have tried to use the globe, but 30 students cannot see it at once. The maps in the textbook are also very difficult to use in a presentation setting. In science we have studied Earth Science, Fossils, Plate Tectonics, and are starting Weather, and the map would be useful in each of these areas. We also would like to use the map for reading in order to get a perspective of where the stories take place. A map is a very necessary object for teaching social studies as well. This proposal, if funded, will help the students understand the basics about the world they live in, across the curriculum! Thank you.
