Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of our main goals in first grade is to develop fluent and engaged readers. This require daily reading practice. Our problem is that we don't receive money in our small annual budget to purchase new books for our classroom library. Who wants to practice reading the same old books all the time?
Who are these books for?
My first graders are excited learners and eager to practice their new reading skills. They look forward to leaning information and sharing fun stories. They are also bilingual learners! I teach first grade in a Bilingual Two Way Immersion school. Native Spanish speakers and native English Speakers together learn academic content in Spanish. They are immersed in it for most of the day. We also teach English to all students at a specified time of the day. As students progress through the grade levels the amount of English increases with the goal of all students becoming bilingual, bi-literate and having an appreciation for other cultures.
My Project
The books in this proposal will give our classroom library a much needed boost. I have chosen books for this proposal that will enhance our collection of Science, short stories and beginning phonics readers. We cannot take for granted the excitement that books bring to the classroom. When new books arrive, students are eager to read and share them. It opens up new conversations and encourages them to practice.
Research has shown that students that don't learn to read by the end of first grade often fail to catch up in later years.
They begin a spiral of frustration and often stay behind. Developing excited and capable readers requires practice, practice, and more practice! You can help us improve our classroom library with a donation for new books.
