I am a special education teacher at a low-income, Title 1 Charter school which educates a heavily diverse Pre-K - 8th student population of mostly refugees and immigrants.
My students are curious, inquisitive, and motivated to absorb experiences and learning.
They arrive in the classroom with a rich cultural history and ready to learn. Many are refugees, having spent most of their lives in refugee camps or locations exposed to violence and natural disasters.
Their school histories are often characterized by interruptions with little opportunity to come into a safe room to learn. Most of our student body has English language learners in the early stages of English acquisition. They work hard to demonstrate appreciativeness and longing to connect with their peers and teachers.
Our school is in the urban Chicago neighborhood of Andersonville. Close to 100% of the attending students are children live in a low-income setting. The student body is large and ethnically diverse, with 40% speaking a native language other than English.
My Project
My students with learning disabilities will expand their learning with the use of the Kindle Fire. It will enable them to increase their comprehension skills with Raz Kids at their interest and reading level. I will be able to differentiate each lesson for the students and share the progress with our Administration team, homeroom teachers and students' parents due to collect evidence for tracking their progress. Student's educational favorite, Brain Pop Jr. features videos centered around current events and content students are learning in their classrooms. This application also creates quizzes based on the videos that students watch. IXL is an application in which students practice math facts and equations that gives them the fluency skills they need to excel. Reports are sent to teachers to track progress. As a special education teacher, I will also be able to guide students to teaching cyberbullying, research skills and create lesson plans efficiently.
