Owning a new book gives us all an indescribable surge of satisfaction. I would love to motivate my alternative high school students to read for recreation by sharing with them the pleasure of browsing through the shelves of a bookstore with the goal of bringing home a treasure. The excitement of bringing home a new book usually leads me to a quiet room to "dig in" and I venture to guess that the majority of our inner city school children have not been exposed to this privilege. I feel that my students would delve into reading if they had a book of their own choosing that would remain a part of their personal library forever. I would like to take my English class of 25 students to Barnes & Noble with a $20 gift certificate each so they can choose a special book of their own. Thank you for your consideration.
