Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from low-income neighborhoods in the South Bronx. The area has a diverse culture surrounding it. Many families are single parent households. Our school has several project developments and a shelter that feed into it. Most of the families are poverty stricken. These kids are so appreciative to anyone who is willing to teach or help them. My students are from grades pre-k-5 and are in love with soccer and gaga. They cannot get enough of it. For every one of my students, this is not only the first soccer team they have ever officially played on, but the first team in general.
Our equipment that we use for both soccer and gaga are worn out or non-existent.
My hope is that we can continue to push my students to become lifelong learners by getting them to fall in love with a physical activity. They love to learn about how physical activity helps their academics too! Our budget does not allow us to buy new stuff every year. This is a year that we will NEED new equipment. My students will be over the moon to see new equipment for them!
My Project
My students use Phys Ed as an escape. They use it for exercise, competition, thrill, challenge and fun. Students will benefit in our gymnastics unit especially. The mats that we have now, are ripped, they are coming apart and need to be cleaned. We have never gotten new mats. Students will also benefit from the portable goal for our kicking and striking with implements unit. Our school has a soccer team and we practice 3 times a week without goals. We use this equipment across the curriculum as well. Other subject areas use our equipment for special events and enrichment activities.
