Help Provide Uniforms for Our Girl's Volleyball Team!
My students need uniforms for their girls' volleyball team. The addition of a volleyball team encourages better attendance and reduces suspensions, because students wish to remain qualified to stay on the team.
The students in this small high school total 447 students. 92% of the student population is African American, 3% are Hispanic, 1% are multiracial, and 2% are Caucasian. The school has a 37% special education population. 91.6% of the students are considered economically disadvantaged. The school currently has a 35% suspension rate. The attendance rate is 60%.
The students primarily are drawn from the surrounding community, which is near a low-income housing project.
The school also contains a k3-4th and a middle school. Many of the students matriculate through the early grades into the high school. The sense of community at the school is strong, as many of the teachers, administrators, paras, and safety personnel are involved with the after-school recreational offerings and sports events. The teachers are committed and involved with trying to improve the students lives beyond the school building.
My Project
These uniforms will be used for the girls' volleyball team, which currently has ill-fitting and worn out uniforms. The addition of sports teams to schools in a high poverty urban area encourages students to attend school regularly, keep their grades up, and not get into behavior conflicts. They need to have this good status to remain on the team. Sports provides a healthy and safe after-school alternative for students, creates a sense of community, and raising students' self-esteem.
Providing uniforms that fit and are not falling apart will increase student pride in their status on the team.
It will also elevate their sense of self-efficacy and help them feel that others value them and are willing to invest in their efforts.
