Many of our high school students will become the first from their families to graduate, and even more will be the first to attend a college. Most of our students are not blessed with many advantages, but every year we have graduates whose accomplishments land them in some of the most elite colleges in the country.
Our students are primarily low-income and historically-underprivileged, yet are challenging themselves with the rigors of college-level courses because they believe in their capacity to develop a better future for themselves.
These are capable, hardworking, and principled students who merely need resources and supports to achieve their academic dreams.
My Project
Developing literacy is one of the most fundamental real-world skills that students must develop if they aim to live successful, independent lives.
Providing students with a compilation of literature that spans multiple media, continents, lifestyles, and ideologies is paramount to developing students who are not merely literate, but knowledgeable global citizens -- and this text provides the ideal contrast to what is traditionally taught in most American high school English classes.
This novel is terrifically valuable as a tool for developing skills in literary analysis, yes, but perhaps most important of all is that students truly enjoy reading it. When we can kindle within our students an enthusiasm to read, we change their lives.
