Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Tell me and I'll forget. Show me and I may remember. Involve me and I learn." Getting students involved and engaged in their day-to-day learning is a huge predictor of success in school. One of my greatest challenges is being able to engage them using the technology that is part of our daily lives.
My students come to class every day, excited to learn something new!
For many, our classroom is a safe haven from the world around them. We are a culturally and economically diverse population, with equally diverse learning styles. I use Whole Brain teaching techniques and numerous interactive strategies that keep them engaged throughout the day. The one piece that is missing is providing access to technology that will engage them even more. In a class of 32 students, we have just 3 student computers.
Over 60 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, which means they are from families in great financial need. Many of my students' parents are unable to assist them with homework after school. Over 50 percent of my students have no Internet connection at home, and have no access to the technology they will be expected to understand and use in their future school and work careers. Thus, providing as much help as possible during school hours becomes of the utmost importance.
My Project
Students LOVE technology and will benefit greatly from being able to interact with these tools that they love. I am requesting 3 iPad minis and protective cases for my students. We will use our new iPads in daily literacy and math centers (stations). Students will have access to hundreds of books online, which can be listened to or read individually; this practice increases reading fluency. We will also practice spelling, phonics, and vocabulary skills. We will use math apps to apply newly-learned strategies for solving math problems. We will be writing and animating stories, and recording narration for these projects. Collaboration will be encouraged! The possibilities are both endless and exciting!
Your donation will empower these underprivileged students with tools for success and a world of possibilities.
They will have access to digital books and online tools which will give them the skills they need to become college and career ready. They will learn responsibility, and they will see that even though they may face greater hardships in life than their peers, they deserve every opportunity for success. Thank you so much for considering our project!
