My students need 7 Otterbox cases to protect their iPads. These powerful learning tools are still breakable. Cases reduce worry and keep the focus on learning.
Technological literacy is a necessary 21st century skill, and tablets provide this opportunity via technology: programming, audio books, video editing, interactive tutorials, and more! However, tablets need protection to maximize everyday use in the classroom. This is why we need tablet cases!
The students I teach come from diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic backgrounds.
We are a Title 1 school where the need is great, and opportunities available at more affluent schools are generally limited. We teach our students to dream big, that they can go to college, and that STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers present a wonderful opportunity. But without the resources to entice, cultivate, nurture, and build those interests students lack a concrete connection or vision. We are very lucky in that we've been able to procure funding for classroom tablets from some very generous sponsors. But our tablets need cases too, and that's why we are turning to DonorsChoose.org for help.
My Project
Tablet computers, like the iPad mini, promote hands-on interactive learning. Increased engagement means increased understanding as we instill a love of learning via standards-based content. The tablet provides a huge return on investment for years to come given the amount of computing opportunities relative to the cost. But we have to find ways to protect that investment so that it does last for years to come. This is where the cases we carefully researched and requested come into play. Responsible stewardship of materials allows us to build toward our long-term goal of creating an interactive STEM-based classroom with multiple technologies readily available.
Donations sponsoring this project make a real difference for students who otherwise lack the support and resources to pursue STEM-related careers.
These students are often new to our country or come from low-income backgrounds where families are unable to create these kinds of opportunities. We share resources across classrooms so 100+ students will benefit. By exciting interest through accessible STEM projects, students realize the value and potential of their education.
