it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I have seen the critical role that the arts play in stimulating creativity and in developing vital communities….the arts have a crucial impact on our economy and are an important catalyst for learning, discovery, and achievement in our country.” – Paul G. Allen, Co-Founder, Microsoft
We currently are a growing middle school music program in a school that attracts both gifted/advanced studies students and STEAM magnet students in addition to the hardworking local students.
Our program has grown from 100 music students in Fall 2012 to over 250 students in Spring 2017. Our music program is full of enthusiastic students that want to learn as much about music and their instruments as possible. Students happily flock to the music room before school, during lunch and after school, in addition to their music class, to learn more music and practice together. It is a joy to work in an environment that is full of passion and devotion.
My Project
At this time we are focusing on ongoing maintenance to keep our equipment in top shape. In the past, much rehearsal and class time has been spent repairing student instruments due to instrument cases that are falling apart or a percussion stand that repeatedly comes apart as the metal pins that broke a long time ago are temporarily replaced with paperclips. The students are very careful with the instruments, but the worn out cases and stand are causing good instruments to drop and break. Students do struggle to learn music and play on instruments that are not fully functional. All of our school's instruments have been through Los Angeles Unified School District music instrument repair shop and are now fully functional, even if the cases are held together with rubber bands.
The donations from this project will improve our school's music program by providing new cases for worn out instrument cases that can’t be repaired and a new snare drum stand to replace the one that is the most worn out.
The cases will help keep the instruments safe when they are not being played and will greatly reduce the need for future repairs and disruption to the students' music education. The new music snare drum stand will help the percussion students focus on learning in the music classroom as students won't constantly be distracted by stand that wants to drop the drum because it is falling apart. Students will appreciate the new equipment as they will be able to focus solely on learning, without interruptions from their equipment.
