Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first-year English/Language Arts teacher at The Urban Assembly School of Business for Young Women, which will be temporarily housed in the East Village Community School, and am asking for an LCD projector for our ELA classrooms. The UASBYW is a brand new public school for girls from low-income areas in New York who are interested in learning more about business and leadership. The school will open in September with 108 9th grade students, most of whom receive free or reduced lunch. Our students will attend extended school days in order to receive an intensive college-prep education. In addtion, the girls will be receive the opportunity to visit a variety of New York businesses and each will receive a female mentor who works in the "world of business"--a world that most of our girls know nothing about.
In order to introduce the girls to the world of business, and to prepare them for business communication, I would like to incorporate PowerPoint presentations, website creation, and internet research into my lesson plans. However, because most of the girls do not have computer access outside of the school it is essential that I be able to teach and demonstrate these techniques in class. The students will also be required to present these projects in order to cultivate their public speaking and presentation skills. In order for this to be possible, however, our school would need an LCD projector.
The projector would be used in both ELA classrooms, thus benefiting all 108 students, but would also be used in school-wide presentations. I conducted extensive research and found what seems to be one of the least expensive LCD projectors available at the apple.com Education website. Please help us provide our girls with an authentic introduction to the world of business—one that will truly prepare them to be tomorrow's leaders.
