Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Applying for college is not a fun process. And it's even less fun assembling your application and realizing you can't even apply to certain programs because you have not taken the necessary tests. Please help prepare my students for the SAT II biology so they can apply to their top college choices.
Teaching at a charter high school in California is quite a unique experience.
My students are not only inspired to attend college, but many of them are applying to the best programs in the country. They aspire to become scientists, doctors and engineers. However, the biggest challenge that I have as an 11th grade teacher is to prepare my students for the SAT biology subject test. This test is required in order to apply to the top colleges in the country. And while my school has a program to prepare students for the SAT there is no effort to prepare students for the SAT II, a test that is equally important for college admission. My students are incredibly motivated to take this test and to succeed. And, with a bit of help, I know they will attain their goal.
My Project
My students have agreed to stay in class for 2 hour-long sessions each week to get preparation for the rigorous SAT biology exam. My struggle now is to provide them with the best tools to help them reach their always ambitious goals. SAT II test prep books will be an invaluable tool for my students since none of them have the financial means to buy these books themselves. Many of them have expressed a desire to review the material for themselves at home. They want to do everything they can to attain a good score on this exam. Yet, they need books, such as the Kaplan book, that will show them both the facts and vocabulary that are specifically required for the SAT II. In addition, they need access to practice tests to ensure that they become accustomed to the timed format of the test. With these methods, my students and I can together identify areas of weakness where they should focus their studying.
It's a constantly challenge for a teacher to help struggling students while at the same time pushing the highest-performing students forward.
Though I work constantly to have 100% of my students achieve a top score on the state administered biology exam, I wish to prepare my highest students even further for the SAT biology exam. By buying test prep books and practice tests for my class, my students will have access to all the tools they need to achieve their success.
