My Students

Book series are addicting! It is my goal to get my students yearning and craving for more from Rick Riordan's tales (and not just on the big screen).

I teach at a rural 5-12 school in northeastern North Carolina.

We provide a college preparatory education for students in a traditionally under-served area of our state. Our students attend school from 8:00am – 5:00pm. Additionally, over 65% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch and over 80% will be first generation college graduates. Our students work exceptionally hard everyday to earn the freedoms and choices that they deserve in life.

My Project

With these new book sets, my students will be able to read the same book as a small group of peers, have dialogue surrounding what they have read, and look forward to the next book in the series. Reading from a series propels students to read continuously and become highly motivated readers! Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is a well-written set of tales with mythological allusions and complex characters that come to life! These texts are on a perfect level for my sixth graders!

Reading on grade level is one of the most daunting challenges facing our students.

The achievement gap data shows that too many of our students are entering kindergarten already at a gross disadvantage in terms of vocabulary acquisition. This gap only widens if students are not actively drawn in to fascinating texts. Pairing students with a fantastic book series is a way to ensure that they improve vastly as independent readers and lovers of reading!
