This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach first grade at a Title 1 school in a suburban community. I am lucky to be in a school where parents are engaged in their child's learning. This is apparent in the enthusiasm students come to school with each morning.
Our school is striving to help our students become better leaders.
A large part of this effort is our participation in the PBIS intiative. We have several incentives that encourage students to make good choices. The favorite school wide incentive for students is the school store.
My Project
It has been proven that children respond best to positive interventions. The goal of the PBIS initiative is to support students in making good choices and becoming leaders in the community. Every day as students travel around the school and work hard in class teachers give out tickets. The tickets can be earned through making good choices, being respectful, being responsible, always being safe and following school rules. Students have the opportunity to spend their tickets in the school store every Friday.
The items we have requested will go towards stocking the school store with fun items as well as school materials and snacks.
Items like notebooks, poppers, pencils and bracelets put meaning behind the tickets students earn. It gives students that desire to work towards a goal. Many of our students save up for weeks to get the big ticket items. A fantastic result of this is that students have started supporting and bragging on one another in trying to reach their goals.
