Our classroom serves students who have a wide range of disabilities. They range from developmental disabilities and autism to auditory and visual disabilities. Many of our students have difficulties with socialization and verbalizing their wants and needs. Due to the nature of these disabilities, we NEVER have a typical day. We are always doing something fun and different.
My students, though they are special needs students, come to class each and every day with a willingness and desire to learn.
While our school is located in very low socioeconomic area, the students do not let their situation bring them down. They come in and count on me to teach them. Because of the location of the school and the disabilities that they have, each one of these students is batting an uphill battle. They each come to school with such a positive attitude despite the challenging hands that they have been dealt. We have a very close-knit school community, and everyone works together to ensure that everyone is taken care of.
My Project
Many of our students in our Applied Learning Program (self-contained) struggle every day with the ability to verbalize their wants, needs and feelings. Because of this, our students will sometime act out and exhibit unwanted behaviors. While we have been working hard to strengthen their social and communication skills and to decrease unwanted behaviors, many of our students will benefit from the use of visual schedules and other behavior management tools. These tools range from visual schedules using pictures of the next activity that they will be doing during the day to actual written words adhered to their desk or to the classroom white board to sensory centers in our sensory corner of the classroom, as well as token economy (sticker charts).
By having a Cricut machine, my students will be able to help create not only their own schedules, but also their own behavior management tools such as charts and scales.
We want to give them the opportunity to be a part of managing their behaviors and navigating new technologies. Letting the students help to personalize their behavior management tools (token economy charts, visual schedules, etc.) by choosing different colors and textures, and allowing the students to not only choose the theme and design the set up of the tools, my students will be much more willing and likely to follow their plans and reach their goals of being productive members of society.
