I teach young children with multiple disabilities. They are a wonderful group who love to learn. It is a joy to provide them with unique and meaningful learning experiences. Most of our students have physical challenges as well as medical issues and cognitive impairment. Although their challenges are many, their enthusiasm and positive spirit empower us to develop their skills and increase their level of independence at school, home and in the community. We are proud of their accomplishments and want to find creative ways to showcase their abilities.
One of the most important skills that we can teach our special students is the ability to communicate their needs and wants to others. Most of our students do not speak yet have the ability to make their needs and wishes known through alternative means of communication such as using pictures/communication boards. I just received a Boardmaker software program that has the ability to create hundreds of pictures that our children can learn to use to communicate. Some of these pictures can be used to provide choices such as juice or milk or book or CD player. Other options include pictures to ask for help, to get out of their wheelchair, to use the bathroom, to say "I love you etc. The possibilities are endless. What we need in order to make this become a reality is a color laser printer. A color laser printer would print out the pictures quickly and easily. With a switch interface the children could press the switch button and print out their own pictures for their communication board. We also use the pictures to label objects around the classroom so that the children learn the names of common items such as table, chair etc.
Can you imagine the joy of a family when their young child is able to communicate, "I love you!" Please help our children learn to make choices that will enable them to have options that we all take for granted. It will afford them the dignity they deserve. We would be thrilled if you would consider funding our proposal. I know that this project would provide our children with valuable skills for life. We will take pictures of our children using the printer and pictures for you. I know that their accomplishments as well as their beautiful smiles will be a wonderful reward for your generosity and kindness.
