I teach physics and a medicine-engineering career track at a new small school, "The School for Democracy and Leadership," in Crown Heights, New York City. A major theme of our school's mission is student leadership. For the past year and a half, students have been working to start a robotics program at the school. Last year, the team received a scholarship to compete in the Botball competition (www.botball.org). Despite being a rookie team, our school won two awards. To compete again, we are searching for funding, so we can afford this year's robots, legos and sensors. Your contribution would help students have access to opportunities such as mechanical engineering and computer programming, generally non-existent in inner-city schools. Also, our school houses an entirely minority population, mostly of Caribbean-American origin. Black youth are vastly under-represented in the physical sciences. So your contribution would also help bring equity to this field. Our students are so excited to participate in robotics! They come early, work in my office at lunch and leave late. They are even helping design a course on robotics for students at my school for which they are raising money. Please contribute to our cause.
