Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade students live in a low-income area with a high English Language learner rate. Most students do not participate in organized sports and our school does not have a PE program.
Thus, in the spring time each year, we coordinate a Student Olympics. Students compete in activities such as hula-hooping, beanbag toss, races, and tug of war. Each class dresses up as a different country and competes in various events. Unfortunately, this year there is a very tight budget and the Olympics may not happen.
The Olympic Games are one of the few activities at our school that allow us to stray from the mandated curriculum. For many of the students this event is the highlight of the year. They talk about previous years' Olympics and how they performed.
The seven first-grade teachers feel that it is very important to stage the Olympics. Not only are the students learning about heath and fitness, but each year they learn about the history and culture of a different country and have to "represent" that country in the Games.
In order to train for the Olympics and have the 140 first-grade students participate, we need hula-hoops, jump ropes, beanbags, and potato sacks. In addition, we would like to give the winners medals and all the students ribbons of participation. This way even if they don't win an event, they will feel a sense of accomplishment.
