Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third grade teacher in East New York. I teach in P.S 345, a shortage school in Brooklyn. About 98% of our students receive free lunch. The majority of the students in our school are below grade level.
My students are motivated and eager to learn. Unfortunately, they are far below grade level. They enjoy reading nonfiction literature. Every day for a period they work in groups while I meet with small groups to work on reading strategies. I would like to have a supplement program that would improve their vocabulary and comprehension skills. This program would be beneficial to my students because they can chart their own progress and they can self check their work.
The program that I am interested in is the Scholastics Reading Skills Kit. The program engages reluctant readers with high interest, visually appealing cards, builds comprehension through accessible text. It also engages students with selections in history, science, technology, geograpy, art and entertainment, and sports and games. The program boosts test score with test taking strategies and skills reinforcement. My students are expected to take standarized tests and this program would be extremely helpful. My goal is to have my students reach their full potential and be on their required level.
Finally, by incorporating this program in my everyday program it would be extremely benefical to my students. It would boost their interests in reading and give them confidence as they experience reading success. Thank you for considering my proposal!
