Help Our Library Become the Hub of Learning With STEM!
My students need STEM materials like snap circuits, coding skill kits, and engineering skill kits to provide them with inquiry-based experiences to freely explore and learn in a hands-on, creative way.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a K-5 elementary building, nestled in a quiet neighborhood of a busy college town. We have a diverse student population, inclusive of students who are learning to speak English as their second language, and students with special learning needs.
Our school library program is an integral part of the instructional team, supporting ALL of our students in academic achievement, 21st-century skills, lifelong learning, digital literacy, and reading.
All students visit the library for a fixed amount of time at least once a week. Each library visit includes a literacy or technology lesson, and time to check out books.
My Project
Having STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) activities for students will enhance our book checkout time in the library, as it will provide students with the opportunity to freely engage with the STEM activity kits after checkout time. During book checkout time, students who returned their previous library books can check out new ones. After students check out their books, they are left with unstructured downtime (while they are waiting for their class to finish checking out their books), which can sometimes lend itself to students making poor behavior choices- especially students who may have forgotten to return their previous library books and are left with nothing to do.
Being able to tinker with joints and gears and build and code robots and circuit mazes will greatly enhance our book checkout time because it will provide all students with a motivating task to do after checking out their books.
STEM activity kits in our library will provide students with the freedom to think critically, problem solve, explore, build, create, innovate, work cooperatively, solve problems, and play - all skills that will benefit students in the classroom and beyond.
STEM activity kits will help our library space become a 21st-century learning environment; the hub of learning in our school. These activities will help every minute of our library time- especially the downtime after book checkout- engaging for all students.
