My students need the bolts of fabric, magnetic pieces, Velcro, plastic shopping items and other items so that then can practice filling orders, practice math and reading activities and hone life skills.
The students we serve range from grades 6-12 and are all in the special education program for our school district. Diagnoses range from ADD to autism to sensory processing disorder. They learn quickly and are always happy to try new things.
I love watching their desire to learn and are so proud of their accomplishments.
Each of the 40 students I serve are learning new skills each day and I look forward to helping them learn more and develop new life skills and hone the ones they already know.
They are the highlight of my day as a therapist and they have inspired me to go back to school to get my teaching credentials.
My Project
This last year we successfully put together a simulated grocery store at our school. The fabric helps us create worker and supervisor vests and the food items give us a more of a variety of items to increase skills. Other autism and special education classrooms have learned of our program and want to be a part of it too!
Using the plastic food, the students learn how to sort, organize, pick items, ring them up and pack bags of food.
The velcro dots allow us to make interchangeable shopping lists and the fabric will be used to make worker and supervisor vests to simulate a work environment. This may seem simple, but it's a collaborative effort between therapists, teachers, paras, and principals to make this effort successful.
Students are learning counting, letter and number recognition and letter and work recognition. We are getting students ready to enter the job force to be productive members of society. Help us help our students be successful by donating so we can obtain the items we need to move ahead!
