Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a math teacher at CS 234, a K-4 school in the South Bronx. Many of my students come from nearby shelters and never get the opportunity to leave the city. Thankfully our school is in a fortunate position right across the street from a community garden. Our students have worked so hard to raise school spirit this year and have come up with many activities that have brought our small community closer together. Their latest idea was to take part in the garden. The science teacher and I went to a weekend training session and are now certified in the GLOBE program. This program gave us so many scientific tools to create a magnificent garden and to monitor its progress with pH meters, weather stations, and soil thermometers. Unfortunately, we have no tools to dig in the dirt. The garden is in rough shape and needs a lot of love. They have their work cut out for them, but they are so anxious to get started. There is a lot of litter to clean up and little time before we need to start planting. The art teacher has jumped on board and wants to have the children create murals for one side of the garden that over looks an ugly parking lot. Please help our school come together on a community project and teach our children to take pride in where they live.
