I work at a new small school, "The School for Democracy and Leadership," in Crown Heights. A major theme of our school's mission is student activism. Students have been working hard this year to improve their immediate school surroundings. As part of this initiative, next year our school would like to develop a garden, which both middle- and high-school students design, build and maintain. Your generosity towards this initiative will help students brighten and cultivate a connection with their environment. They will also explore how green spaces can be included in urban planning. To this end, we hope to receive financial support for the following items: -- Boxes in which students can grow plants -- Seeds and saplings -- Gardening tools -- Curriculum guides for linking student gardening with academic achievement At the last school where I worked, our gardening space became a place to mingle, reflect, draw, and write. Students had fun and learned about growth, recycling and architecture. Please support our garden! I would like to create a space like that at my old school that promotes creative thought in the natural environment. We promise to invite you for a visit when we've made some progress!
