My students need 50 new dictionaries to help them improve their vocabulary and spelling skills.

Do you remember how exciting it was to learn new words and to share what you learned with others? Our students love to learn new vocabulary, but only have two, outdated children's dictionaries to share per class.
In first grade, it is so important for our students to begin developing a higher vocabulary.
One of the standards we teach is to "determine meanings of words by using a beginning dictionary." Our students, who attend a Washington, DC public charter school, absolutely love to learn new words and use them in their own language and writing. However, our students come from predominately low-income households and typically don't have much access to books rich in vocabulary or dictionaries outside of school. Our school's rigorous academic program requires that students learn to use and define new words by using dictionaries, but we need some more resources to get this done!
With these dictionaries, we will be able to ensure that our students are beginning to use dictionaries to discover and learn new words. Writing and vocabulary is a big part of our classroom community, and these dictionaries will give students a new-found independence when wanting to spell a word or determine the meaning of a word they don't know. No longer will we hear "what is an armadillo??!" We'll be able to send students to their colorful, picture dictionaries to find the word and a picture of an "armadillo." Our 65 first graders will be able to share their new vocabulary with the other students and their families, showing how smart and knowledgeable they are!
Developing vocabulary is an integral part of our first graders school lives, but also their futures.
With strong vocabulary skills and the understanding of how to use a dictionary, our students will continue to grow and develop their literacy and writing skills. With your donation, we'll be on our way to becoming first grade "Word Masters!"
