Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are at a Title I school in Oklahoma City. We are a brand new middle school, placed in an old elementary school building. Most of our students are coming in with very little experience in fine arts and are excited to have this opportunity.
Our school seeks to combine a diverse population of student interests that provide a rich variety of experiences and worldviews.
Our school is home to students who come from a variety of races, academic abilities, and backgrounds. Approximately 90% of our students are on free and reduced-price lunch.
My Project
As a brand new dance program, the only costumes we have were donated to us. We have no full class sets of costumes. The students in my classes performed in leggings and a t-shirt for the fall performance.
I would like to give them the opportunity to perform in something that will help them find their sparkle on stage.
These costumes will help boost their confidence while performing. I have also already had jazz shoes that started falling apart because they get worn every day multiple times a day. I have added replacement jazz shoes, so that the students can continue dancing in shoes that are not worn out.
