Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 550 students are a melting pot of nationalities, but many still come from low-income backgrounds. The average income of a family at my school is $27,000. Our city is the 162nd poorest in the state of Connecticut. Students do not always have what they need at home but when they are at school, they are happy and want to learn! I want my art room to be a place where students can not only use art as a form of literacy, but be a place where students can draw connections between reading, writing, and art.
Teacher dedication is making our building a positive learning environment.
We are the second-lowest income but second-highest achieving elementary school in the city. As an extended time and learning school, the students at my school spend three hundred more hours a year at school than the typical elementary school student. Students should have a high-quality experience in school in addition to a larger quantity of time spent in school.
Parents are often very caring and engaged! Parents want to know about opportunities and experiences their children are having in school. They are invested in their children's learning and believe in our school.
My Project
This year our school has made it a primary goal to improve school culture and climate. An important part of this has been creating murals that will inspire students to be kind, support each other, and become inspired to learn and cherish their education.
Fifth graders will study how murals shape and form communities and create a mural that will foster a positive environment that supports diversity and unifies people despite their differences.
Before creating their mural, students will look at murals in cities such as Hartford, New Haven, and the famous Philadelphia murals. We have plenty of access to paint brushes, but still need soap to clean brushes, and tape to make sure we can plan out and grid the mural before painting.
