My kindergartners burst into the door every morning full of stories, questions, and observations about the world. They are kindergarten superheroes ready to help, try, learn and grow.
Our favorite catch-phrase is "I don't know how to do this, YET!"
My district is rural/suburban with approximately 60 percent of students receiving free or reduced lunch. Our area has been hit hard with the recent opioid crisis, affecting many students' home lives. Some of my students have not traveled more than 20 miles away from our town. For my students, school is a safe place where they can play and learn about the world around them.
My Project
Kindergarteners are expected to learn A LOT about reading, writing, and arithmetic, but sitting in a traditional chair all day is not realistic for busy 5 and 6-year-olds. We take frequent breaks and move from tables to carpet, but we need more movement opportunities. I would like for my students to choose which seat helps them do their best work.
These flexible seating options will allow my Kindergarteners to remain engaged all day long.
Students will be allowed to choose at which type of seating they want to work. The balance balls will allow students to move around while working. The wobble cushions provides sensory input and movement for students. The throw pillows will be a comfortable seat for students who do their best work on the floor. The stools are perfect for students who like to work at a higher table.
