Help Our Agricultural Class Hatch Eggs and Learn About Chicks!
Help me give my students the ability to learn valuable information about the poultry industry with a hands-on approach to chickens and incubation of their eggs!
I teach agricultural education in a small-town setting. We have a woodshop, welding and greenhouse facility and a little room for some baby chicks. Many of my students decide that they want to get a career in many fields that require a college education for agricultural careers and others learn hands-on training for various jobs within agricultural fields but all students leave with the basic knowledge that would be great to know just for walking into a grocery store. One of the biggest misconceptions in today's time is that agriculture is not important and that it is just digging in the dirt and messing with animals. I struggle with this concept and trying to reach kids because farming/agriculture can be so fun when you are actually involved with it and see all the science that takes place right before your eyes!
My Project
Students in my class learn valuable information that they can take with them the rest of their life’s for everyday type situations. Some students may utilize towards a career and others just for common knowledge such as buying a carton of eggs or having a flock of laying hens as a hobby! I would like to have chickens at school and even incubate the eggs of chickens so that students have live animals to take care of but also so the students can see the eggs and science behind the incubation process all the way to the laying of an egg. We cover poultry within our animal science unit but the students are not able to see the incubation length of a chicken egg or the process of raising chickens. I would love to be able to cover with students all the science behind raising chickens and incubating eggs. We will utilize the whole process for our poultry unit.
