My Students

I teach in a low socio-economic area. My students come from very supportive families where both parents need to work to provide basic necessities for their families. Most of my children receive free lunch and need assistance from outside sources.

Regardless of my students' home situations, they come to school with a smile, eager to learn to read.

Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend, and free breakfast and lunch. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.

My Project

In my new third grade classroom, we practice reading every day. We use many of our books for reading comprehension, writing biographies, and fiction and non-fiction reports. The children also self-select books to read for enjoyment during transitions, as well as sign out books to read for pleasure.

My third graders crave interesting, new books to learn from.

I have noticed many titles are very popular among the third graders. Being that this is my first year in third grade, my reading library is extremely limited and does not offer a lot of genre choice. I am wishing to create life-long readers. New books would excite them and turn them on to reading.
