It is clear: you learn by doing. When students are able to manipulate and use tools in their exploration of math concepts, they retain more. My students at Theopolis Schmid Elementary School need math manipulatives. Schmid is a small school on the south side of Chicago with about 200 students. As the math specialist, I will work with teachers, but I will also pull out a small group of students, called the powerful five, students who score right below average. We are engaged in a new age in Math at Chicago Public Schools. Students are required to work in small groups, exploring math with their own individual goals in mind. Students must be able to explain in words the match concepts they understand. Every child is not able to learn concepts mentally. While many kids can "memorize" that 5 X 3= 15, some of them need to see 15 counters arranged in 5 columns and 3 rows to get the gist of the concept. Manipulatives are a very powerful tool. Students who are able to touch a rectangular prism, count its edges and faces are more likely to remember that information than if they just are assigned to copy its definition out of a book. I am requesting the following materials to use with my students: two-color counters, color tiles, centimeter cubes, fraction rings, fraction circles, dice, safe-T compasses, protractors, tangrams, and three dimensional solids. I believe these rich hands-on experiences will improve these students understanding of math and will consequently enable them to perform better on standardized tests.
