Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are high energy, optimistic, 9th graders! Rich in humor, culture, and personality, many of them come from difficult family backgrounds, and their teachers have become the most positive influence in their life. Because it is their first year in high school, my students have a lot to learn in order to be prepared for life. We work on building relationships, collaborating in groups, and accessing general education content in different ways.
My goal is to inspire them to always do their best, and to love literature as much as I do.
In the classroom, we focus on the foundational skills the students need to succeed, not only in college, but in life.
My Project
I am a first-year English teacher working in a Title I school. While I absolutely adore my students, I am lacking extremely important resources for my classroom that are essential to their learning. My goal is to INSPIRE them through igniting a love of literature; however, my school library doesn't keep class sets of books that will assist in that goal. Many of them are old, ripped up, or not relevant to their lives. My goal is to provide each of my students with a copy of The Hobbit, so that they can experience the magnificence of quality literature.
Students need to be inspired to love literature in a world full of easy entertainment and technology.
What better way to inspire my students, than through the literary world of J. R. R. Tolkien? Tolkien created a world people loved so much they cared when it was threatened, they cried when it's characters died, and they leapt for joy when the journey finally came to an end. Please help me give my students the opportunity to love the English language and regain a love for reading.
