Were you one of those students who trembled inside at the mere mention of the words pre-algebra or algebra? Remember sitting in class and wondering WHY if 2x+3=11 then x had to equal 4? Or better yet, why ANYONE needed to know what x equaled? Or were you a student who just wanted someone to prove all this abstract math stuff to you? Well, I am a 7th and 8th grade teacher at a middle school with pre-algebra and algebra 1 students who feel exactly that way! Fortunately, there is a fun and easy way to answer some of these questions. The solution is Algebra tiles. They are small tiles of different colors that represent the numbers and variables in an equation. The student can actually build a model of the equation and then SEE the answer for herself! It is truly a miracle for some of my discouraged students! I would like to have a student set of tiles for my students. This would allow all of my prealgebra and algebra 1 students to work out equations on their own or in groups. I would also like to have one set of overhead tiles for demonstration purposes. Each student in my class for years to come will benefit from this purchase. Many will actualy see algebra come to life. I truly believe that giving students a chance to turn abstract ideas into concrete representations is essential for mastering Algebra!
