Help My Students Take Flight with Sherman Alexie!

My students need 70 copies of Sherman Alexie's novel, "Flight".

As a new English teacher, one of my main goals is trying to get students to be interested and inspired by literature. I teach at a magnet school for the arts in NY. My students are ninth graders from a variety of backgrounds in regard to socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and reading level.

This year, I have been blessed to receive 35 copies of Flight through Donors Choose. So far, I have 35 junior students reading the book as an extra reading, before I do a unit with the freshmen. (One student read the entire book on Thursday night!) I want my 9th grade students to be able to have the same experience as the juniors: the opportunity to read and relish in the beauty of a great book at home. Unfortunately, one of the biggest challenges my school faces is the number of books available. This is especially true of the freshmen book list. Our freshmen become very accustomed to doing all reading, including of novels, in class with the aid of their teachers. I want my students to have the opportunity to take a book home with them this year. At this point, with 35 copies of Flight and 105 freshmen students, my 9th grade classes will have to read the entire novel in class. As a result, the students will not have as much time to discuss the issues and conflicts that Alexie so powerfully addresses in the novel.

If I am able to acquire 70 more copies of Sherman Alexie's Flight, I can ensure that my students will have the opportunity to bring an enriching novel home with them this year. I also will know that my classes will have the chance to engage in thorough and developed conversations about the book, instead of spending most of our time together reading aloud.

Through your support, you will make it possible for my students to enjoy reading, while also improving their literacy skills. Students will also see that reading can be an activity performed and appreciated outside of the walls of school. Many students walk into high school with their minds made up about themselves as readers. The opportunity to read Flight would provide my students with a chance to (re)discover the excitement of reading. Thank you!
